That’s how Jack and I feel every week here in Kapsowar. It’s such a gift—and we don’t take it for granted. Here’s a little snapshot at what we’ve been up to lately that has been bringing us so much joy :

Jack’s Kangaroo Care Study

Jack is kicking off a new study this month focused on improving Kangaroo Mother Care. The basic idea: the more time a mom spends holding her premature baby skin-to-skin, the better that baby’s chances of survival. One part of the study involves creating a dedicated space just for this kind of care. Jack handed that project off to me, and I loved getting to put it together. A church team visited in April, and I organized the supplies and guided the team on setup. The space turned out beautifully!

Jack in the Newborn Unit

Every time I walk into the newborn unit, I’m amazed at what Jack is doing. There’s one story in particular that’s nothing short of miraculous. Dorcas delivered quadruplets at just 25 weeks. Sadly, three of the babies didn’t make it, but one little fighter did. Baby Bravin, born at the very edge of viability, is the youngest baby to ever leave our hospital alive. His story is full of both sorrow and joy, and I’ll be sharing more soon. It’s pretty incredible.

Friends of Kapsowar—We’re (almost) Official!

Since we arrived, it’s been a dream of mine to launch a U.S. nonprofit to support the hospital. And now—it’s happening! We’ve appointed board members and started the paperwork with the state. I’m working on branding (website, logo, collecting stories—my happy place), and I’m so excited to get this off the ground. More updates coming your way in the months ahead!

Team Retreat in Kisumu

There are about seven long-term expat families and a couple of individuals living here in Kapsowar, all with different mission sending agencies. Right now, the Walhof Family and Kaylea (our intern) are the only other Serge teammates here. This month, we took a team trip to Kisumu—about four hours away by car—for our yearly Serge team retreat. It was so refreshing! We had time to connect, talk about our vision, and just relax. And the best part? I didn’t cook a single meal and spent lots of time in the pool! My kind of vacation!

Breaking Ground

All of our expat and some Kenyan staff live right next to the hospital on what we call “mission station”. We’re currently at max capacity, we have more families here than ever before! But if the hospital is going to grow, we desperately need more housing for future physicians to live here and space to educate our kids.

In April, we broke ground on a big project led by Samaritan’s Purse that will add 48 new housing units (a mix of guesthouses, townhomes, and single-family homes), plus a community center that’ll also serve as a school. It won’t be finished until mid-2026, but this is a game-changer for our community. I made a short video about the project and groundbreaking below.

Homeschool Life

It’s hard to believe Micah is almost finished with kindergarten! Every day, Miss Kaylea meets with him for reading, and it’s been so fun to watch him start sounding out three-letter words. Jack and I tag-team the other subjects—math, handwriting, literature, and history. It’s a full family effort, but we genuinely enjoy being part of his learning journey.

There’s something really special about the uniqueness of our life here—but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t miss a few things from home, like watching him walk across a stage in a tiny cap and gown to get his “diploma.” I can totally picture him trying to wave to us in the middle of the ceremony.

We’re trying to keep these updates a little shorter (easier said than done!), but there’s always so much to share. We also can’t wait to share more soon on the beautiful things you’ve helped make possible through your financial support since we’ve been back.
