Subscriber First Name,In my last blog, I wrote about the contrast between delivering Micah in San Diego, versus the conditions mothers deliver here in Kapsowar. Let’s just say it’s not glamorous. There are no epidurals, private rooms with bathtubs, or doulas singing your praises. You bring their own sheets, pads, and diapers because the hospital doesn’t provide them. These mothers get lots of cred in my book. But even more, as I’ve been thinking of the Christmas story this year as a mom of two now, I think of Mary - delivering a child in a barn. I’ve been around lots of livestock these past 7 months as we live in a rural and agricultural area, and let’s just say that’s the last thing I want around my newborn baby. What’s remarkable is that this is how the King of the Universe enters our story. As a powerless baby, born in poverty and obscurity, to an oppressed people group. It’s quite astonishing when you really think about it. This was how God decided to bring his Kingdom to earth. He stepped down from all power and privilege, and entered into the place of need. It gives me encouragement for our work here in Kapsowar. We work in obscurity in a remote part of Kenya. We work with very limited resources. We struggle with learning and growing in understanding our new context. We lack the political power to change an unjust and broken system. And yet, this is how the Kingdom comes. Slowly, in poverty, in need, in brokenness. This is our why as we follow in His footsteps. Like an unassuming infant, born in a manger - Jesus is working here in Kapsowar, whether we recognize him or not.
